Another Positive Review for Pattinson and ‘Remember Me’

Warning! There are some plot spoilers in this review… or at least we learn Tyler and Ali’s back stories…

REMEMBER ME (2010)

Remember Me is a sweet and sombre melodrama of two wounded souls finding hope and love in pre 9/11 New York.

The trailers suggest a Nicholas Sparks weepie of boy meets girl standard variety, but this is much more than that. Rather, what is featured is a story of two broken families of different social and economical sectors, struggling to mend old wounds as their children fall in love with one another.

What Remember Me does promise is a workout for the eye glands: this one is a tear jerker, with many poignant and sobering revelations about the nature of love and loss, how the soul is never too far gone for redemption, and how family is a blessing not to be taken for granted.

Key in its success is the casting of two appealing actors in its lead roles.

In his first official post-Twilight-craze-outing, Robert Pattinson stars as Tyler, the black sheep of a well to do family torn apart by the suicide of their eldest son, with Pattinson stuck in a permanent melancholy while sucking down a never ending amount of booze and cigarettes.

Acting on a dare (that ever cliché tool used in many romance movies), Tyler asks and goes on a date with working class college student Ally (Australian actress Emilie de Ravin). She also knows the pain of death in the family when –as a child- she witnessed the murder of her mother, a harrowing scene depicted in the film’s opening moments.

Even though its beautifully played love story is its drawcard, what will be remembered in Remember Me is the relationships with the fathers of these characters, played by the ever reliable Chris Cooper (as an over protective cop, father to Ally) and Pierce Brosnan (a self absorbed lawyer with shaky Brooklyn accent, dad to Tyler).

It is the moments with the fathers that give the characters a depth and maturity other films of the same ilk do not allow, even if their actions can come across as immature in their post-teen angst.

Allen Coutler’s assured direction makes it all so. He allows his actors the patience to grow into their characters (wonderfully written by Will Fetters, his debut) and his cast responds with assured performances, filled with emotion and grit.

Of particular point is Pattinson, whose now patented brooding and angst is turned up a notch and used very well. There is no doubt that Hollywood wants to mold him into a new James Dean, and it seems Pattinson is more than happy to comply, with one particular confrontation between Pattinson and Brosnan begging for the teen heart throb to scream “You’re tearing me apart!” ala Rebel Without A Cause.

Yet despite the melodramatics (or perhaps because of it), Pattinson lives up to the expectations placed on him. Twilight launched him into to stratosphere, but it will be roles like this which will make him an actor to remember.

Congrats to Rob!! Looking forward to this movie more and more as I see what good reviews it’s getting :)

What’s Playing Reviews ‘Remember Me’: First Great Film of 2010!

March 2nd, 2010

Here’s some great Praise for Remember Me which is making me look forward to seeing Robs performance even more!!

remember_me_movie_image-4-600x399

If Twilight is Robert Pattinson’s ride in first class – the smooth, painless jaunt with slightly-prettier views and largely grime-free surroundings, then Remember Me is the British heartthrob’s excursion in Coach – a slightly cheaper, not quite as cushy and slightly bumpier ride without the views and continuous pop music playing from surrounding speakers.

But as most usually discover when they ride coach, it’s a lot more memorable a trip, and even more so, you’re usually surrounded by great people you’ll possibly never forget (in my case, I met one of my oldest friends riding on a bus when I was about 14-years-old!). And I tell ya, you won’t soon forget the people or the plot of the terrific Remember Me either.

No offense to Twilight or its sequels (in fact, I’ve found the films perfectly entertaining), but a scene from any of the flicks isn’t something an artiste would ever likely attach as a wmv file to their email application to Julliard. Perfectly OK film, but its more style over substance, and quite frankly, there’s nothing much for its stars to do but frown, gaze, eyeball or whimper. As a consequence, we haven’t really seen whether or not Robert ‘good guy vampire Edward’ Pattinson has what it takes as an actor (considering he does more sparkling than performing in the latter films). We know he’s got perfect hair, and he’s definitely got enough charisma on-screen and off to convincingly win over his leading lady, but is the young Brit capable of delivering a performance that’d make those decrepit wrinkled film fans at the Kodak theatre sit up and take notice?

We now have the answer. And, it’s Yes.

Pattinson’s turn as the forlorn, love-struck and appreciably human Tyler in Remember Me is the role that’ll turn the young actor from a movie star to an ‘actor’.

Tyler’s your typical troubled youth. Having his lost older brother a few years before, which in turn has consequently pushed his bigwig father (Pierce Brosnan) even further away than he already was, he’s a bit lost, and seemingly convinced nobody knows what he’s going through. That’s until he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), a young girl with just as many horrors in her past, not to mention father problems of her own. Together, Tyler and Ally find happiness and a reason to carry on.

There’s a black cloud hanging over the relationship though. Unbeknownst to Ally, Tyler knows her father, and their coming together had nothing to do with chance. The stern New York Police Detective (Chris Cooper) had arrested him not long before. And it was only when Tyler and his roommate (Tate Ellington) discovered Ally was the officer’s daughter did they decide to approach her.

Directed by Allen Coulter (Hollywoodland) and based on a script by Will Fetters, this highly-emotional journey is all meat. Here, you’ll witness not only fine performances, but be immersed in a story that not only captives, but touches, teaches and quite possibly, makes us a better person as a result. It really is, quite the package.

The romance at the center of the film, performed brilliantly and credibly by Pattinson and Lost star de Ravin, is one of the rawest, realest and most unforced couplings in recent years. It works brilliantly. There’s more fantastical about it at all – thus, you honestly believe they’re a true-blue couple.

Just as credible is the relationship between Pattinson and on-screen father Pierce Brosnan – it plays far more valid than most on-screen father-and-son duos, with the former 007 giving an especially grounded but welcomingly more multifarious take on an armour-clad father, hell-bent on not exposing his real emotions.

And speaking of memorable performances, young Ruby Jerins, playing Tyler’s inhibited and bullied sister, gives one that’ll hopefully catch the attention of the award voters early 2011.

Many will talk of the film’s shock ending, which quite frankly seems to come out of nowhere, as brilliant an idea as it may be, but that hopefully won’t overshadow the fine film that’s played out up til then.

Remember Me is the first great film of 2010. Not to be missed.

8 Clips from Remember Me!

March 1st, 2010

Love the clip of Rob and Pierce arguing! Pretty intense!

With Robert Pattinson’s new movie Remember Me getting ready to open on March 12, we’ve been provided with 8 clips from the film. If you’re the type that loves watching as much footage before a movie comes out, you’ll love these clips. Saying that, I always think movies are better knowing as little as possible, so if you can resist the urge, avoid watching them. I just wanted to give you the option.

And while an embargo prevents me from saying too much about Remember Me, I think it’s safe to say I really enjoyed the movie. I walked in knowing nothing about story except who was in it, and the movie really drew me in and surprised me in a lot of ways. The only thing I really want to stress to all of you is avoid every review and spoiler online. If you know too much walking in, the twists and turns won’t mean as much to you. I didn’t know anything in advance and am happy I had that experience.

Hit the jump to watch the clips and read the official synopsis:

Remember Me also stars Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan, and Chris Cooper. Allen Coulter directed the film and William Fetters wrote.

Here’s the synopsis:

In the romantic drama Remember Me, Robert Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious young man in New York City who has had a strained relationship with his father (Pierce Brosnan) ever since tragedy separated their family. Tyler didn’t think anyone could possibly understand what he was going through, until the day he met Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate. Love was the last thing on his mind, but as her spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him, he begins to fall for her. Through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life. Soon, hidden secrets are revealed and tragedy lingers in the air, as the circumstances that brought them together threaten to tear them apart.

Kellan Lutz’s PETA Campaign for Pet Adoption

February 26th, 2010

kellanpeta

Twilight star Kellan Lutz has always been very vocal about his love for rescue pups Kola and Kevin. But now, the actor is taking the cause of animal adoption to a national platform, serving as PETA’s latest spokesperson in their “Adopt, Don’t Buy” campaign.

Shot by celebrity photographer Collin Stark, the advertisement features Lutz posed with his first dog, Kola. “She’s my best friend,” he tells PETA in an exclusive interview. “There are countless numbers of animals out there. It’s our job to take them under our wing.”

Lutz explains that he found Kola in a shelter, curled up and frightened in the back of a cage. “I touched her toe and said, ‘Hey, what’s your name?’ ” he recalls. “She spoke to me.” Warned that she was a puller, Lutz decided to walk her anyway, and knew then that he’d found the one. “From that day on, I loved her,” he says.

According to PETA, about 8 million unwanted dogs and cats enter shelters every year — and half of them are euthanized due to space issues. “There are surprisingly many animals in these shelters,” Lutz says. “It’s sad, and knowing that they get euthanized. For the fans of Twilight out there who have so much love, give that love to a pet if you don’t have one.”

Pet adoption is something we are passionate about here at our little blog.  My family rescued an abused Pittbull about 6 years ago now and he’s turned out to be the most lovable and not to mention smart dog we’ve ever owned…he thinks he’s a 65lb lap dog haha.   You never know how much love could be waiting for you at a shelter!  Thanks Kellan for taking time to share your message!
